Tied Shocking Blue

In the first game of 2012, the Zug Flames tied league leader Shocking Blue 4-4. The game was closely fought with Shocking Blue holding onto a small lead throughout. However, with JY the goalie pulled and only 5 seconds left, Francois Longpre scored his second of the night from the slot on a sweet pass from Christian Carlsson.

Also scoring for the Flames were Teemu Jelkanen and Jonas Nilsson.

The Flames have 3 games left in the regular season before playoffs start in mid-February.

Sweden takes gold in Calgary

Congratulations for the Swedish U20 team for taking 1st place at the World Junior Championships in Calgary. By beating Russia 1-0 in overtime, the Swedes broke a 31 year old drought and made a hockey mad nation proud.

Zug Flames complete sweep of Thalwil

The Zug Flames beat EHC Thalwil at home today 7-3.  We got off to a slow start and let Thalwil take a 2 goal lead. But then in the 6th minute, Rob Johnson broke the ice and beat the Thalwil keeper on a wrist shot to the upper corner. Also scoring in the 1st period were Jonas Nilsson, Eric Diedrichsen and Francois Longpre.  We ended the 1st with a 2 goal lead.

Not wanting to let Thalwil back in the game, we kept up the forechecking and added 2 more goals both by Mikko Heikkila. Thalwil was never really able to get and sustained offensive pressure.

The 3rd perod saw another goal by Francois Longpre and goal in the 59th minute by Thalwil.  JY David made some great saves and kept us in the game when it counted. 

The win puts us tied for 2nd place in the ZSPL with 2 games in hand.

 

 

ZFHC lose in a thriller

On Sunday afternoon, the ZFHC lost to Shocking Blue 3-4 in a thriller of a game.

SB scored first on a questionable call by the officials. The shot appeared to hit the post and bounce out but was ruled in.

Undaunted, the Flames struck back on a beautiful goal by Jonas Nilsson.

The 2nd period was marred by some of the worst officiating I've seen. Missed offsides, missed icings and just plain made up calls to name a few.

In the 3rd, with the game tied at 2:2 and 5 minutes to play, SB scored to take the lead. The Flames kept up the pressure and with less than 2 minutes to go tied the game on another goal by Jonas Nilsson.

With 20 seconds left in the game, SB put in the winner on a deflected slap shot. Game over.

Zug Flames beat Thalwil 11-2

On Saturday night December 3rd, outdoors in Thalwil, the ZFHC beat EHC Thalwil 11-2 to earn their 1st victory of the season.   After weeks of beautiful weather, the heavens decided to open up and it poured rain for 3 periods.  Despite the wet weather, the ice surface was in pretty good shape.

The Flames got off to an early start with 2 goals in the first minute of the game by Francois Longpre.  That put the Thalwilers on their heels and we pretty much controlled the game from there. 

Both Christian Carlsson and Eric Diedrichsen had hat tricks.

The Zug Flames next game is on Sunday 4.12.11 in the Bossard Arena, Zug.

 

Bruce arrives in Brasil!

Well done and congrats to the greatest sailor we have on the team - he made it. After 4200 miles in 33 days, Bruce crossed the finish line of the Transat race a few hours ago.

This guys deserves a Flames beer.

Flames 1st game a tie!

The Zug Flames faced off today against EHC Baar 88 in the 1st game of the ZSPL season.

The teams were pretty evenly matched with the lead changing hands a couple times. With 10 minutes to go in the game, the Flames had a 5-3 lead. But then some errant penalties gave Baar several power plays which they capitalized on. Final score 5-5.

Update on Bruce

Our teammate Bruce Gailey has successfully completed the 1st leg on the
Transat 6.5 across the Atlantic sailing race. He arrive in Madeira on the
5th of October in 23rd place. Here is an excerpt from the race website:

"They fought until the end. They were four in a superb last sprint: Bruce
Gailey (529 - Black Mamba), Benoit Laurière (539 - teamkalonig.com), Jorg
Madden (636 - Samsara) and Ulf Brandstrom (772-GRPMS.com ). They completed
this stage in this order. They congratulate each other once on the ground
and we understand how pleased they are... Nice!"

The 2nd and final leg of the race begins on October 13rd when the boats set
sail for Salvador de Bahia, Brazil
